Sloane Street and Knightsbridge are within easy reach of the London Underground, on the Circle and District, and Piccadilly line. These stations link to overground and national rail services. For frequent business flyers, London City Airport is just a 50-minute journey away by public transport. Bus services in Knightsbridge are also plentiful and connect residents to the rest of London 24/7. Car owners in Knightsbridge will need to apply for a parking permit from The Royal Borough of Chelsea and Kensington unless they have off-street parking. Costs are reduced for electric vehicles, and you can also drive in the area without ULEZ charges if the vehicle meets the emissions standards. Otherwise, there is a daily fee.

A BRIEF HISTORY

The area of Knightsbridge dates back to the 11th century. Local legends maintain the name originated from two knights having a fatal duel on the bridge over the Westbourne River. In remembrance, it was dubbed Knightsbridge. In the 17th century, Charles Sloane Cadogan, 1st Earl Cadogan, granted a lease to architect Henry Holland to develop Hans Town, Sloane Street, and Sloane Square. Holland designed the street layout, built houses, and sold building rights on the development. In the 19th century, Knightsbridge welcomed landmark development stores Harrods and Harvey Nichols, and with a boom in retail, King’s Road became the centre of British fashion we know today.

KNIGHTSBRIDGE PROPERTY

In Knightsbridge, expect red-brick properties, extraordinary new developments, restored period homes, neat tree-lined streets, and manicured squares. Many houses in this area are large white Regency homes built in the 18th century. While some are now flats, others remain in their full four-storey glory. Just across from Sloane Street is Pont Street. Properties here are Dutch-style red-brick buildings built by Earl Cadogan. Like the Regency properties, many are now flats. The prices of properties for sale in Knightsbridge reflect the affluence and distinctiveness of this sought-after location. Cadogan Square is another beloved residential square close to Sloane Street. Named after Earl Cadogan himself, the houses here are grand mansions and rank amongst London’s most expensive and desirable properties. Smaller properties are primarily in quiet mews, such as the picturesque and quaint homes on Lennox Gardens Mews, First Street, and Richard’s Place. They are often two or three bedrooms and come with abundant character. There are many properties to rent in Knightsbridge. The Cadogan family still owns some rental properties, while others are new developments with independent landlords or agents.

WHAT'S ON

As it’s just a stroll to Hyde Park, Kensington Gardens, the Regent’s Canal and Little Venice, boating and picnicking have become popular pastimes for Paddington residents. Outdoor ping pong and giant chess are all the rage at Norfolk Square Gardens and Talbot Square Gardens, while big-screen shows (sports, film and cultural) are now a seasonal draw at Sheldon Square. From October to July, the Puppet Theatre Barge stages its own, unique brand of entertainment from a winter mooring at Little Venice, while the Canal Café Theatre hosts award-winning, fringe-style shows all year round.

Knightsbridge is also home to an inimitable mix of Michelin-starred restaurants, cafes and bars. It’s a place to find any dining experience you desire. From fine dining at Five Field to after-work drinks at Wildfire Chelsea and everyday health food at The Good Life, restaurants in Knightsbridge have something for all occasions. From trendy to traditional, Knightsbridge offers a range of bars to unwind and enjoy a night out. Private members clubs, cocktail bars and good old-fashioned pubs are available here.

SCHOOLS

Several schools, colleges and nurseries are in this affluent residential and retail area. Francis Holland is an all-girls school welcoming juniors, seniors, and sixth formers. Knightsbridge School is a private education centre from nursery age to senior years. There are plenty of primary school options to choose from, including Holy Trinity, St Joseph’s Catholic School, and Eaton House. The city is home to some of the world’s finest universities and further education institutions. Renowned Imperial College London is a mile northwest of Sloane Square, and other prestigious universities are just a short tube ride away.
